[font=Times New Roman][color=#000000]Contemporary studies in cognitive science routinely invoke the notions of "distributed cognition." This presentation will explore two different types of distribution: between agents and other agents ("social distribution"), on the one hand, and between agents and cultural tools ("instrumental distribution"), on the other. In actual settings the two are usually intertwined, but investigators have tended to examine one or the other in relative isolation. Borrowing from studies in cognitive[/color][/font]
[size=10.5pt][color=#000000]anthropology, psychology, semiotics, sociology, and literary theory, this presentation will outline an approach to instrumental distribution that focuses on the contributions of sign systems, especially natural language in the form of narratives, to cognitive functioning.[/color][/size]
